Desertscene in association with Sound of Liberation are proud to announce the desert rock innovators, Yawning Man, will be coming to The Black Heart, London on 29th July 2018 along with Sons of Alpha Centauri.
Born among the sand dunes of La Quinta, California in 1986, Yawning Man struck up the perfect sound for their surroundings; raw, flowing and psyched-out. Often playing generator parties deep in the desert, their open air jams made a huge impact on many who went on to lead the stoner rock scene. Brant Bjork, for one, has proudly stated Yawning Man are the greatest band he's ever seen.
As if it wasn't impressive enough that they inspired many of the founding fathers of the stoner rock scene, they managed to gain their reverence without a single release for almost twenty years. The band's first official releases - the Pot Head EP and Rock Formations - dropped in 2005, confirming to the wider scene what they'd already been told; Yawning Man jam hard. Adding to that catalogue with 2016's fantastic Historical Graffiti, they continue to be one of the most exciting bands in the underground thirty years in.
Support for the night comes from the UK’s own Sons of Alpha Centauri, who bring an instrumental mix of stoner and post rock. Formed in 2001, SOAC have been providing the groovy instrumental wares ever since. Their self titled debut, released in 2007, a highlight of the late noughties UK stoner scene, is expansive in its tone and in its 70 minute full length. In the following years, the band put out various split releases with the likes of Karma to Burn (a clear influence in the band’s sound) and Waterways, as well as a full length split with Treasure Cat; all of which are well worth a listen. On top of this, the band’s connection to Yawning Man runs deep, with their 2009 collaboration, Yawning Sons, giving the world the impeccable Ceremony to the Sunset.
The very first band on the mainstage at the first Desertfest London, Sons of Alpha Centauri have always been a special band to us at Desertscene. With their first solo full length in 11 years, Continuum, released 1st of June, it comes just in time for the gig. We can’t wait to hear how it sounds live.
